MIS, ISD, ISPM Graduate Program Technical Prerequisites
Purpose of the Technical Prerequisites
Technical prerequisites are intended to ensure that all students are sufficiently prepared for graduate level work in IS. Although valuable, it is not a requirement that
technical prerequisites be satisfied prior to admission to the
MIS, ISD, ISPM graduate program. However, students who leave the
technical prerequisites until the end of the program will still be required to satisfy them in order to graduate.
Students are admitted to the program with diverse academic backgrounds and a variety of work and professional experience. The
technical prerequisites serve to level the knowledge base for entering students and afford a richer classroom experience.
Upon admission to the MIS, ISD, ISPM graduate program your faculty advisor will provide you with a written assessment of your prerequisite needs and whether any deficiencies noted need to be satisfied by course work, by workshops specifically designed for this purpose, or by waiver exam.
Technical prerequisites must be satisfied prior to beginning formal graduate studies. If you are required to satisfy
technical prerequisites via courses, workshops, or waiver exams, it is mandatory that you take as many of them as possible each semester until they are all complete. Your advisor will provide guidance on scheduling.
Course Work
Academic courses taken within the past five years from an appropriately accredited academic institution, in which you received a grade of "B" or better, may be used to satisfy the prerequisite requirements in programming, systems analysis, database, or statistics. Such courses must be approved by the applicable faculty advisor.
Professional seminars and other non-academic courses are not adequate.
The following GW courses do not need prior approval:
Workshops
Workshops are offered as a refresher for those students who have some background in information systems but need to improve their skills. Only students who have been directed by their advisor to complete a prerequisite workshop should register.
Workshops are offered in programming, systems analysis, and database. No workshop is available for statistics.
Waiver Exams
Waiver exams are offered at each campus and are recommended for students who have acquired the appropriate skills and experiences outside the academic environment and have no formal documentation to demonstrate that they have met the prerequisite requirement.
There is no charge for taking a waiver examination.
Each exam takes approximately one hour, during which no outside materials may be used.
The examination will cover general and implementation-specific principles. Refer to the individual study guide for each topic for details.
All waiver exams must be taken prior to the end of your first semester of enrollment in the
MIS, ISD, ISPM graduate program. You may take each exam only once. Results will be forwarded to you within five to seven days of taking the examination. Students who wish to take more than one waiver exam must attend more than one exam offering.
It is important to note that waiver exams are not appropriate for students with no previous experience in these areas. The waiver exam study guides are merely guidelines as to the topics covered on the waiver exams. They are not comprehensive study guides. Hence, students with little or no experience in these areas should choose classes or workshops as appropriate.

Technical Prerequisites
Programming
Satisfied by:
The programming prerequisite can generally be satisfied by an introductory-level programming course in one of the preferred languages, provided a grade of "B" or better was obtained. Pascal, C, C++, Visual Basic, and Java are the preferred languages. It is not intended that students must be proficient programmers, although this is a valuable skill, but rather that the fundamental structure of software programs and the process of creating them is understood. Fundamental BASIC and database languages are not acceptable for fulfilling this prerequisite.
Systems Analysis
Satisfied by:
The systems analysis prerequisite deals with formal methods of analysis such as data flow diagrams, entity relationships and data dictionaries. The systems analysis prerequisite can be satisfied with a one-semester academic course from an accredited institution (with a grade of "B" or better) in systems analysis, such as MGT 120. Students who cannot satisfy the prerequisite through prior coursework and/or the waiver examination are required to take MGT 120 or the systems analysis workshop which is offered once per semester at the
Virginia Campus,
Ashburn and the
Graduate Education Center,
Arlington.
Database Systems
Satisfied by:
The database prerequisite addresses database systems, hardware and software technology, computer networking and other related areas. In addition to the waiver exam and coursework, a hands-on workshop is available to satisfy this prerequisite.
Business Statistics
Satisfied by:
The statistics prerequisite is specified in the content of the course MGT 202 or equivalent. Only an academic course (or courses) in the area of business statistics, with a grade of "B" or better from an accredited institution, may be used to satisfy this prerequisite. Please refer to the GW Bulletin description of MGT 202 for more detailed information.
