Executive Master of Science in Information Systems (EMIS) FAQ

Lecture hall at the Virginia Campus

Due to the non-traditional format and unique curriculum of the EMIS program, we are often asked to outline what makes the program special. Below are key components that separate the EMIS program from other educational options. This list is not intended to be comprehensive or to replace the need for us to speak with you or someone from your organization directly to ensure that the EMIS program is the right program for you.

What makes the EMIS program unique?

The EMIS Program addresses in detail how information
technology can be applied to assist organizations in achieving their
management objectives. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and
integrated in a fashion that blends functional understanding of
technology-based concepts with general management/leadership
skills. These concepts are taught in an accelerated format on
alternating Fridays and Saturdays to allow working professionals
the opportunity to obtain a master’s degree in 15 months while
maintaining a full-time job.

Who teaches EMIS classes?

The program draws on the strengths of both information
technology and management instructors in the Department of
Information Systems and Technology Management. The faculty
is comprised of carefully selected full-time and adjunct faculty
members. All faculty members are experienced graduate-level
instructors and have significant professional experience. EMIS
faculty members have received high ratings from past cohorts in
terms of their knowledge, professionalism, availability, and sincere
interest in helping students succeed.

Why is the program offered on
Fridays and Saturdays?

Many successful professionals’ weekday commitments simply
make pursuit of an advanced degree on a part-time basis
impossible. Furthermore, many do not want to take the two to
three years that part-time study requires. The alternating Friday/
Saturday schedule allows for sharing of the time invested between
the employer and the student’s personal time.

Who is admitted to the program?

The EMIS Program is intended for accomplished
professionals, generally defined as having at least
10 years of professional experience with a focus on
management and decision-making responsibilities.
Each cohort is comprised of students who come
from a variety of professional backgrounds, as well
as undergraduate, and graduate experiences. The
EMIS program seeks applicants, with the appropriate
experience including management and technical
skills, who are energetic and can make valuable
contributions to the cohort.

Why is a cohort limited to 21 students?

A small group environment facilitates discussion
and interaction between cohort members and faculty.
Therefore, we designed a Management Decision
Center with only 21 stations to enhance student
learning.

What is included?

The program tuition and fees are determined each
year by the Board of Trustees. Books, materials and
meals are provided as a courtesy to the students.
The all-inclusive approach allows us to provide
participants with an efficient program in which
the principle focus is the learning experience.

What type of administrative support will I
receive while I am in the program?

We strive to make the entire educational
experience exciting and stimulating for the
EMIS students. To facilitate this, we have
full-time staff who are available to answer
your questions and help you with any
administrative issues that may arise.

What exactly will I learn?

Through course work in database design and
development; information systems security;
telecommunications and enterprise networks;
strategic planning and business process engineering;
decision support and expert systems; emerging
technologies; and Internet-based applications,
students will:
  • Gain hands-on experience in the latest tools and
    emerging technologies;
  • Learn to integrate strategic technology with
    today’s business issues;
  • Learn to analyze business problems and identify
    appropriate IT-based solutions; and
  • Attain a full understanding of the issues and
    principles involved in information system design.

So what makes the program different?

In a word: everything! The faculty, the staff, the
participants, the curriculum, and the format all
combine to provide a unique educational experience.
Moreover, the EMIS Program is particularly
relevant as information technology and its effective
management play an increasingly important role
in this era of global competition, organization
downsizing, and quality initiatives. If you recognize
the need to maximize your ability to use information
technology to meet these and other challenges, then
the EMIS Program is for you.
