About the Program

Students in the MIS, ISD, ISPM graduate program are encouraged to choose from three fields of study. All provide students with a strong foundation in information systems development, telecommunications and networks, database systems, and the design of on-line information systems. Each differs slightly in its emphasis on the technical or managerial aspects of information systems.

Provides a solid technical understanding of contemporary information systems as well as the managerial skills necessary to effectively identify and implement solutions within an organization.

The MIS field of study focuses on the use of information systems to support management activities.

CIO University certification is available for the MIS field of study.

Provides thorough preparation for a career in the application of computers to complex data and information problems found in organizations today.

The ISD field of study is excellent preparation for anyone interested in designing information systems to fulfill a need, whether in business, government, or not-for-profit organizations.

  • Programmer-analyst

Provides a solid technical foundation in information systems coupled with course work emphasizing project management and leadership skills.

The ISPM field of study is excellent preparation for anyone wishing to manage small to large information systems projects.

Positions frequently held by graduates:

  • Information Systems Manager
  • IT Project Leader
  • Program Manager
  • Project Manager

 

Course Load

The MIS, ISD, and ISPM curricula comprise 42-45 credit hours of study, including 12 from potentially waived technical prerequisites.

Classes generally meet one day each week during convenient late afternoon and evening hours.

Full-time students take a minimum of three courses during the fall and spring semester and may opt to take an additional one to two courses during the summer. Most full-time students complete their graduate studies in one to two years, depending on the number of prerequisite courses needed.

Part-time students usually take three to six credit hours each semester, allowing them the flexibility to balance their academic workload with their professional responsibilities. Part-time students generally complete the program in two to three years, although a maximum of five years is allowed.

CIO University Certification

The George Washington University's MS-IST program with a concentration in MIS including ISTM 272 (formerly known as MGT 272) and ISTM 274 (formerly known as MGT 274), as either electives or additional coursework, qualifies for CIO University certification.

To apply for certification, submit the CIO University Certificate Application by April 3rd, after completing all graduation requirements. Students graduating after the spring semester may apply during their final semester.
